Michael Che To Cohost SNL's Weekend Update

In a surprise turn of events, former SNL writer and current fresh Daily Show correspondent Michael Che is now returning to the late night variety program as a Weekend Update host. Che will join Colin Jost in telling the week's news stories with some sort of punchline. The comedian confirmed it on his Twitter account earlier Thursday night:

According to a New York Times report, the show's producer Lorne Michaels has been trying out several combinations of hosts over the past few weeks. Lorne notes that it is difficult to make changes but he ultimately comes to the conclusion that “Michael is a strong writer, and he’s really funny."

There are a lot more changes coming this season with two more featured players to take the stage although those names have not been finalized yet. Then there is the three hour 40th anniversary special in February. As a bonus, Michaels hs come to the decision that instead of reairing recent season's episodes of SNL at 10 PM before new ones, the network will show episodes from the previous 39 seasons. 

This will make the first two man pairing on Weekend Update.

And Now Those Lonely Island Boys Get The Judd Apatow Treatment

It's just a matter of time until the musician is a full fledged comedian. Josh Groban, Weird Al, and kind of/sort of Jamie Foxx have all made the transition from musical prodigy to comedic funnyman. 

Deadline reports that Universal has picked up a film from Judd Apatow Productions that will star Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone. Better yet, it will be a musical. So many people's dreams just came true. 

The three will produce the film alongside Apatow. Duties are said to be split between Taccone and Schaffer. Both musicians directed many of the videos seen on the team's YouTube channel as well as SNL. Scaffer was also the one who directed the cult film Hot Rod starring Andy Samberg. He even took the reigns of the 2012 sci-fi comedy The Watch. Taccone directed MacGruber and episodes of Parks and Recreation and Samberg's Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

What's better than seeing two of the funniest Saturday Night Live actors in their early days? Nothing I tell you. Tina Fey and Rachel Dratch had their own sketch show (two years before Fey got the writing gig at SNL and Dratch was just recently cast) that ran at Second City and New York's UCB in 1999. Thankfully, a very grainy copy of the full Dratch and Fey show made its way to the YouTubes.

Brooks Wheelan Says He Was Fired From 'SNL'

Lorne Michaels is a man that knows what he wants in his shows. It's his way or the highway and, apparently, it's the highway for Brooks Wheelan. The LA comic tweeted late Saturday night that he was let go after only one season.

He tweeted: "Had a blast and loved every second of it. I'm totally honored to be able to make this next joke… FIRED FROM NEW YORK IT'S SATURDAY NIGHT!" Wheelan became a writer on SNL last August and was bumped up to featured player. However, he never saw much screen time. Most of his appearances were on Weekend Update and he did have an impresion or two but that's about it. 

Ben & Jerry Is Releasing Two Of Their Many SNL-Inspired Flavors

Ben & Jerry are two cats who know their priorities: ice cream and improv. Last week, the creamy conglomerate announced that they would be launching a few flavors of based on Saturday Night Live sketches. With over 40 years of sketches and probably like a billion ice cream flavors, there are so many combinations that the company could use. 

Whelp. The first sketch they decided to go with was the Kristin Wiig recurring character Gilly. Dubbed "Gilly's Catastrophic Crunch," the flavor comes with a marshmallow swirl that imposes itself between chocolate and vanilla ice cream that is loaded with caramel clusters and fudge covered almonds.

The other flavor they decided to go with is the SNL Digital Short/Lonely Island song "Lazy Sunday." It will be vanilla cake batter ice cream mixed with yellow and chocolate cupcake pieces and a swirl of chocolate frosting. That sounds way too appetizing for diabetics. Two other flavors are expected later this year. Here's hoping for a Really?!?! Weekend Update or What's Up With That flavor.
