Insecure
“Hella Blows”
Season 2, Episode 6
I could use a sexplosion...
With so many story threads opened and only two episodes left, Insecure is quickly arriving to a conclusion that seems inevitable. At least, one of a handful. Issa and Lawrence could get back together. They also don’t have to. The same thing can be said about Molly and Dro. Lawrence could end up with a coworker (which was hinted at in this episode). Issa could be alone – again. Molly could realize Sterling K. Brown’s Lyon is perfect in every way. She could also move to Chicago or get a promotion. Issa and Lawrence could equally get promotions. The ideas are all out there, floating in this space that’s equally predictable and uncertain. But it’s never about the ending though; it’s all about the journey.
Issa’s journey is somewhat stalled. Her car is toast, her hoetation is breaking down, and work life is just as unreliable. Every writer knows about The Hero’s Journey where said hero goes on an adventure, solves a crisis, and comes home changed. When this season began, Issa began her quest as a woman with a roster of dudes and struggling to make her new work ideas go over well. Her crisis (crises, really) at this point are her car, losing Frieda’s respect and dating. So far, there’s no indication of when or if she’s going to have her problems resolved. Issa is trying to dig herself out of this social pit she may have dug herself into. It all comes to head when Issa gives Daniel a blowjob only to have it all go wrong. To that end, this is probably the first time there’s ever been an accurate representation of semen on television. Impressive, Insecure.
Molly’s journey is going in stops in starts. Her work (Lawrence’s too) compared to Issa’s is exponentially getting better. It’s her sex life that’s suffering. Getting with Dro may be the worst thing for her emotionally. She had a guy that would’ve been perfect for her last season in Brown’s Lyon but she is constantly pushing him aside. A relationship with Dro is 100% no viable. Even though it’s open, he’s still in a marriage. To some minor extent, Molly pursuing Dro is much in the same vein as her dad cheating on her mom all those years ago. The only difference is the other party knows about it. Anyone can point out the moment in which Molly experiences the truths of the relationship – how she can’t be with Dro in the capacity she’s accustomed to – when he receives a phone call from his wife. It’s a fast facial motion that indicates awareness of the situation. Dro’s line – “We can keep talking about this. Or just be in it. What do you want?” – is especially poignant and should stand out in Molly’s understanding of what their new relationship is, awkwardness and all.
Aloofness, on the other hand, is Lawrence’s forte. It takes him two separate meetings with his bosses for him to get that his app is not what they’re looking for. He’s been working on this idea since the first season. It sounds good on paper but comes across antiquated when he is able to give a pitch on it. Let’s not place the entirety of blame on Lawrence; his bosses should be able to tell him what the issues are straight up and not just compliment his shoes. Lawrence’s journey? Non-existent at this point.
Other adventures this week include the ladies going to Sexplosion – some type of female driven sexperience. It’s there they learn to give great blowjobs. Kelli says some funny stuff. And Tiffany is flawless as always.
Should you watch “Hella Blows?”
The sexcapades continue in an episode with one and a half worthwhile stories. Molly seems to be the only one with character growth even though she doesn’t want to go through with it. Issa needs to slow it down herself. At some point, her hoetation is going to come to a head. And Lawrence needs more ideas. He’s too cool to just fade into the background both at work and in the show.
